Lexington, Kentucky — Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) said Sunday that President Donald Trump and outside groups supporting challenger Ed Gallrein are growing “desperate” as Kentucky’s closely watched Republican primary enters its final days.
Speaking on ABC’s This Week, Massie argued the intense attention from Trump allies signals his campaign remains competitive despite millions of dollars spent against him. The eight-term congressman pointed to recent campaign activity, including major ad buys and high-profile visits from Trump administration officials and conservative allies.
Massie has become one of Trump’s most visible Republican critics in Congress during the president’s second term, opposing parts of Trump’s tax and spending agenda, pushing for full release of the Jeffrey Epstein files, and repeatedly challenging executive war powers involving Iran.
The race against Trump-endorsed Navy SEAL veteran Ed Gallrein has become one of the most expensive House primaries in U.S. history, according to Politico. Massie has accused billionaires and pro-Israel political groups, including AIPAC, of attempting to buy the seat through outside spending.
Trump has aggressively targeted Massie in recent weeks, calling him “unreliable” and comparing him unfavorably to Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA), who recently lost his reelection effort after years of conflict with Trump.
Polling in the race has shown tightening margins, with one recent survey giving Gallrein a narrow lead. Massie, however, said Trump’s attacks have also helped his fundraising by energizing anti-establishment conservatives and libertarian-leaning Republicans.
The Kentucky primary is increasingly viewed as a national test of Trump’s continued influence over Republican incumbents who openly challenge him.
