Louisville, Kentucky — Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) is facing what may be the toughest primary challenge of his political career as President Donald Trump and allied groups spend heavily to defeat one of the Republican Party’s most independent lawmakers.

Massie will face Trump-backed challenger Ed Gallrein in Kentucky’s May 19 Republican primary, a race drawing national attention as a test of Trump’s continued influence over GOP voters and candidates.

A libertarian-leaning conservative first elected in 2012, Massie has built a reputation for opposing both Republican and Democratic leadership on spending, surveillance, foreign policy, and executive power. During Trump’s second term, he has repeatedly clashed with the president over tax policy, military authority involving Iran, and congressional transparency issues tied to the Jeffrey Epstein files.

Outside groups supporting Trump have reportedly spent more than $25 million on advertising that attacks Massie and promotes Gallrein. Recent polling has suggested the race has tightened significantly in recent weeks.

Massie told the Washington Examiner the election would likely depend on turnout, arguing that younger Republicans have largely supported him while older GOP voters appear more aligned with Gallrein and Trump.

The congressman has also faced controversy late in the campaign after allegations from a former girlfriend about an offer of payment connected to a workplace complaint against Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-IN). Massie denied the accusations.

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO), one of the few House Republicans publicly backing Massie, plans to campaign with him in Kentucky ahead of the vote.
