Washington, D.C. — U.S. forces struck two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island Sunday, marking the first American attack on Iranian territory since late July and triggering another round of retaliation from Tehran.
U.S. Central Command said American forces observed Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps personnel preparing launchers near the Strait of Hormuz and took what it described as “limited, precise action” against an imminent threat. The military said the launchers were connected to efforts to deploy sea mines in the strategically important waterway.
Larak Island sits near the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant share of the world’s oil supply passes. CENTCOM said U.S. forces recently completed clearing sea mines from internationally recognized shipping lanes and remain positioned to protect commercial traffic.
Iran later responded by launching ballistic missiles at U.S. military installations in Jordan, according to Iranian officials. Reuters reported that most were intercepted and no significant damage was immediately reported.
The strike comes six months into the U.S.-Iran conflict, which has disrupted oil shipments and contributed to higher energy prices.
Sunday’s attack was the first known U.S. strike on Iran since July 29, when American forces targeted Iranian positions following an attack on a U.S. base in Jordan.
