Amman, Jordan — Iran launched ballistic missiles Monday at military bases in Jordan used by U.S. forces, marking a renewed escalation after American strikes on Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian state television said missiles targeted the King Hussein and Al-Azraq airbases in retaliation for Sunday’s U.S. attack on two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island. U.S. Central Command said those launchers were being prepared to deploy rockets and sea mines that threatened commercial shipping.
Jordan’s armed forces said eight ballistic missiles entering its airspace were intercepted. A U.S. official told Reuters that nearly all incoming missiles were destroyed, with no immediate reports of major damage or U.S. casualties.
The exchange ended a roughly month-long lull in significant direct fighting between Washington and Tehran. The conflict began six months ago and has repeatedly threatened shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global energy supplies.
Oil markets reacted quickly. Brent crude climbed above $90 per barrel as traders weighed the possibility of additional disruptions in the region.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard vowed further retaliation following the U.S. strikes, while American officials described Sunday’s operation as limited and defensive.
The renewed fighting comes as the Trump administration continues applying economic pressure on Tehran while facing growing domestic scrutiny over the duration and objectives of the war.
