Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump said Monday that the United States will reinstate a naval blockade targeting Iranian maritime traffic and charge a 20% fee on cargo moving through the Strait of Hormuz.
Reuters reported that Trump said the strait would remain open to international shipping but that vessels traveling to or from Iranian ports would be blocked. He also said the U.S. should be reimbursed for securing the waterway, one of the world’s most important routes for oil and gas shipments.
The announcement followed renewed clashes between the U.S. and Iran after Tehran again declared the Strait of Hormuz closed. Axios reported that the blockade has been announced but not fully implemented, with timing expected from U.S. Central Command after legal notice to shipowners.
Iranian officials rejected the U.S. move and warned that continued American military involvement could worsen the crisis. The dispute also raises legal questions because the Strait of Hormuz is an international shipping lane used by vessels from many countries.
Markets reacted quickly. The Wall Street Journal reported that oil prices rose after the blockade announcement and renewed attacks around the strait.
