West Palm Beach, Florida — President Donald Trump said the United States has benefited financially from its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, drawing attention for comparing U.S. naval operations to piracy.

Speaking at an event in Florida, Trump described an incident in which U.S. forces intercepted an Iranian vessel attempting to bypass the blockade. He said the ship was disabled and seized, along with its cargo, which he characterized as part of a “very profitable” operation.

“We took over the cargo, took over the oil… We’re like pirates,” Trump said, framing the enforcement effort as both effective and economically beneficial.

The blockade was implemented in response to Iran’s own actions restricting passage through the strategic waterway, a critical route for global oil shipments. U.S. officials have argued the move was necessary to counter Iranian pressure and maintain control over shipping lanes.

Reports indicate the blockade has had economic consequences for Iran, including currency declines and rising unemployment, increasing pressure on the country’s economy.

Trump also suggested the U.S. could reconsider diplomatic engagement with Iran, signaling a continued hardline stance as tensions remain elevated in the region.
