Washington, D.C. Democrats hold a narrow national edge over Republicans on congressional control less than five months before the 2026 midterm elections, according to a new NBC News poll.
The survey, conducted May 29 through June 7, found that 49% of registered voters said they want Democrats to control Congress after November’s elections. Forty-four percent said they want Republicans to maintain control, while 7% were undecided. The poll included 2,400 registered voters and had a margin of error of 2 percentage points.
NBC’s March poll showed a similar result, with 50% preferring Democratic control and 44% backing Republican control. NBC noted that neither party has held more than an 8-point advantage on this question in its polling dating back to October 2018.
Democrats need a net gain of four Senate seats to win control of the chamber in 2027. The Cook Political Report rates the open North Carolina Senate race, where Republican Sen. Thom Tillis is retiring, as leaning Democratic. Cook also lists Senate contests in Maine and Ohio among the most competitive races.
In the House, Republicans hold a slim majority. Redistricting has given the GOP possible new opportunities, but several toss-up districts are currently held by Republican incumbents.
