Manahawkin, New Jersey An Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer was struck by a fleeing vehicle Monday morning during an attempted arrest in Stafford Township, prompting the officer to fire at the vehicle as the suspect escaped.
The incident happened around 9:30 a.m. on Route 72 near Mermaid Drive in the Manahawkin section of Stafford Township. According to Stafford Township police, ICE agents were operating in the area when a suspect fled from law enforcement in a vehicle and struck an ICE officer.
Police said the officer discharged a firearm and is believed to have struck the fleeing vehicle. The suspect remained at large as the investigation continued Monday. Authorities did not immediately release the officer’s condition or identify the suspect.
Stafford Township police said their department was not participating in the ICE operation because of New Jersey’s Immigrant Trust Directive, a statewide policy limiting local law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. Police said their role was limited to managing traffic and securing the crime scene.
News 12 New Jersey reported that the FBI had taken over the investigation and that officials said there was no threat to the public. Route 72 remained closed near Mermaid Drive while authorities searched for the suspect and processed the scene.
