Washington, D.C. — Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin accused Democrats on Sunday of using rhetoric that he says is contributing to political violence as candidates intensify campaigning ahead of the midterm elections.

Speaking on Fox News’ “The Sunday Briefing,” Mullin said public officials face persistent threats and argued that political language can cross from protected speech into incitement. “The dangerous rhetoric that the Democrats use is absolutely stirring the pot or putting fuel on the flames,” he said. Fox News confirmed Mullin appeared on the program Sunday to discuss national security and political threats.

Mullin also pointed to threats against President Donald Trump and said elected officials across the political spectrum are increasingly vulnerable when appearing in public.

His comments come amid broader concern about political violence targeting officials from both parties. The Washington Post reported earlier this year that governors, mayors, state lawmakers and local officials have increasingly sought private security, armored vehicles and home protection as threats have grown.

Recent incidents have included assassination attempts against Trump, the killing of Minnesota Democratic state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, and past plots targeting Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Mullin said DHS would intervene when threats move beyond speech into illegal conduct, while emphasizing that political disagreement itself remains protected.

The remarks add to an already heated debate over whether increasingly confrontational political rhetoric is contributing to threats and violence against public officials.
