Magdeburg, Germany — Alternative for Germany candidate Ulrich Siegmund thanked Elon Musk after the far-right AfD won a historic victory in Sunday’s state election in Saxony-Anhalt.

“Thank you, @elonmusk, for your support and for your clear and highly important perspective on the political developments of our time — including here in Germany,” Siegmund wrote on X after Musk responded “Gut gemacht,” or “well done,” to the party’s performance.

Final results showed the AfD winning 43.8% of the vote and 39 seats in the 83-seat state parliament, more than doubling its support from the previous election. The center-right Christian Democratic Union finished second with 17.2% and 15 seats. The AfD fell three seats short of an outright majority.

Siegmund declared that his party had “written history” and claimed a mandate to govern. Chancellor Friedrich Merz, whose CDU suffered a major defeat, said his party was deeply shocked by the result.

Musk has publicly supported the AfD for more than a year. In January 2025, he appeared virtually at an AfD campaign event and described the party as Germany’s “best hope.” He also previously published an opinion piece endorsing the party.

The AfD has campaigned heavily on immigration restrictions, cultural nationalism and skepticism toward Germany’s existing foreign-policy approach. Germany’s domestic intelligence authorities have classified parts of the party as right-wing extremist, a characterization the AfD rejects.

President Donald Trump also shared an image Sunday highlighting the AfD’s growth in German polling.
