Trenton, New Jersey — New Jersey Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell is under investigation over allegations of inappropriate behavior toward women and possible ethics violations, including claims involving the potential offer of state jobs.
The inquiry was initiated by Gov. Mikie Sherrill’s administration and is being led by former New Jersey Attorney General Christopher Porrino and other attorneys at Lowenstein Sandler LLP. Investigators have been interviewing complainants, state employees and potential witnesses, according to the New Jersey Globe, which first reported the investigation.
Caldwell, 66, also serves as New Jersey’s secretary of state and has been cooperating with investigators. The precise nature and extent of the allegations have not been publicly detailed, and no finding of misconduct has been announced.
“The governor would take any reports of inappropriate behavior or misconduct extremely seriously and expects our public officials to hold themselves to the highest standards,” Sherrill spokesperson Sean Higgins said. The governor’s office declined to confirm or deny specific personnel matters.
The investigation began before Caldwell served as acting governor for several days while Sherrill was outside the state, drawing criticism from Republicans who questioned why he remained in that role during the inquiry.
New Jersey Republican leaders have called for Caldwell to step aside while the investigation continues. Caldwell has not publicly responded in detail to the allegations.
The outside investigation remains ongoing, and no timetable has been announced for its completion.
