Washington, D.C. — Former Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall III said Sunday that he could not serve in President Donald Trump’s administration, accusing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth of politicizing the military and creating a “climate of fear” inside the Pentagon.
“I’ve never seen an attempt to politicize our military like the one being conducted by Pete Hegseth,” Kendall said on ABC’s “This Week.”
Kendall, who served during the Biden administration, argued that Hegseth’s leadership style is discouraging military officials from giving candid advice and prompting experienced personnel to leave. He said senior officers have an obligation to resist orders they believe are illegal, unethical or morally wrong.
His criticism follows the resignation of Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, who left after months of reported tension with Hegseth. ABC News reported that Driscoll had repeatedly warned White House officials about Hegseth’s firing of senior officers and efforts to block some military promotions.
Hegseth has removed or sidelined numerous senior military leaders while arguing that personnel changes are necessary to restore accountability, readiness and what he describes as a stronger “warrior” culture. Critics, including some lawmakers and former officials, contend that the moves place too much emphasis on political loyalty.
Kendall also criticized U.S. military operations against suspected drug-smuggling vessels, calling the campaign unconstitutional.
Asked what he would do if he still headed the Air Force, Kendall rejected the premise entirely.
“I couldn’t serve in this administration,” he said.
