San Diego, California — Mexican Senator Enrique Inzunza Cazarez was reportedly arrested this weekend in San Diego after being indicted in New York on federal drug trafficking and weapons charges tied to the Sinaloa Cartel.
According to reports citing Mexican media outlets, the 53-year-old senator from Sinaloa surrendered to U.S. authorities and was taken into custody by the Drug Enforcement Administration. U.S. officials had not publicly confirmed the arrest as of Sunday afternoon.
Federal prosecutors unsealed the indictment in April, accusing Inzunza Cazarez and nine other current or former Sinaloa officials of helping protect cartel operations in exchange for political support and influence. Charges include narcotics importation conspiracy, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and conspiracy related to weapons trafficking. If convicted, he could face life in prison.
The indictment is part of a broader U.S. crackdown on the Sinaloa Cartel, which American officials describe as one of the world’s most powerful and violent drug trafficking organizations. Prosecutors allege cartel operations relied heavily on corruption involving politicians and law enforcement figures in Mexico.
U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton said in April that drug trafficking organizations “would not operate as freely or successfully without corrupt politicians and law enforcement officials on their payroll.”
