Washington, D.C. – U.S. forces struck Iranian military targets Friday after President Donald Trump accused Tehran of violating a ceasefire agreement by attacking commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. Central Command said the strikes targeted Iranian missile and drone sites, storage facilities, and coastal radar installations after a commercial vessel was attacked while transiting the strategic waterway. CENTCOM called the Iranian action “unwarranted aggression” and said U.S. forces remain committed to keeping shipping lanes open.
Reuters reported that Iran was blamed for firing drones at commercial ships, including the Singapore-flagged Ever Lovely. U.S. officials said several drones were intercepted, but one struck the ship. No major casualties were immediately reported.
The attack disrupted efforts to reopen one of the world’s most important energy routes. Roughly one-fifth of global oil shipments pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
The strikes mark a serious test of the ceasefire agreement signed last week, which was intended to halt fighting and allow safe commercial passage through the strait.
