WASHINGTON, D.C.Iran has declared the Strait of Hormuz open to commercial shipping during a temporary ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, easing concerns over a major global energy chokepoint.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said all commercial vessels may transit the strait during the 10-day ceasefire, though ships must follow designated routes set by Iranian authorities. The move comes as part of broader efforts to stabilize the region following weeks of conflict.

President Donald Trump welcomed the reopening but confirmed that a U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports remains in place until a broader agreement is reached. The strait, a narrow passage between Iran and Oman, carries roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply, making it critical to global markets.

Oil prices dropped sharply following the announcement, reflecting reduced fears of prolonged disruption. The waterway had been largely closed during the conflict, significantly limiting shipping traffic.

Diplomatic efforts continue, with U.S. and Iranian officials signaling potential talks to extend the ceasefire and reduce tensions. However, disagreements remain over the terms of the broader conflict and enforcement measures.
