Dallas, Texas — Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker escalated his attacks on Vice President JD Vance this week, calling him President Donald Trump’s “chief bootlicker” as Republicans gathered in Dallas for their midterm convention.
Pritzker made the remark during an interview with Jen Psaki before traveling to Texas, where Democrats organized a counterprogram to the Republican gathering. He said Democrats intend to tie Vance closely to Trump’s policies rather than allow him to present himself as a more conventional Republican.
“We’re going to make sure that the public understands that,” Pritzker said, arguing that Vance has stood with Trump on major administration policies. He also criticized Vance over the ongoing Iran war, calling him one of its architects, though Vance has not publicly detailed the advice he has given Trump on the conflict.
The “bootlicker” line was part of a broader effort by Pritzker to portray Republican leaders appearing at the convention as closely aligned with Trump. Pritzker also used more personal language against the president, claiming Trump is suffering from dementia. That is a political attack, not a medically established diagnosis.
Vance was scheduled to deliver a keynote address at the convention and has frequently been discussed as a possible 2028 presidential candidate. Pritzker has likewise declined to rule out a future White House bid.
The exchange offers an early preview of how sharply personal the political rhetoric surrounding 2028 is already becoming, even before the 2026 midterms are decided.
