St. Paul, Minnesota — A Somali asylum seeker who was living legally in Minnesota and appears to have no criminal record beyond two parking citations is being held at the U.S. military detention facility at Guantánamo Bay, according to immigration records and reporting by Minnesota Public Radio.
Adam Abdullah, 31, arrived in the United States in 2023 and told MPR News he had a work permit, Social Security number and regularly checked in with immigration authorities. Federal agents detained him in St. Paul in December during the Trump administration’s Operation Metro Surge.
Minnesota court records reviewed by The Washington Sun show Abdullah’s only recorded offenses were two $56 parking tickets for failing to move his car during snow emergencies. Both were paid.
Abdullah said he was transferred to Guantánamo after being told the facility would be a refueling stop on the way to Somalia. Instead, he has remained there for roughly two weeks and says he has not been told why. ICE records confirm he is detained at Camp 6.
The Department of Homeland Security said the flight carrying Abdullah included people with serious criminal histories and described them collectively as “some of the worst of the worst.” However, DHS did not answer follow-up questions about Abdullah’s specific record.
His case highlights the widening gap between the administration’s rhetoric about targeting dangerous criminals and some of the people actually being sent to Guantánamo.
