WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the United States will stop providing roughly $4 billion in annual aid to Israel beginning in 2027, while continuing to sell military equipment to the longtime U.S. ally.
Trump told Fox News that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had approached him about ending the assistance and that the two had discussed the idea for several years. Trump said Israel no longer needs the money and argued that continued aid had become a political issue in the United States.
The current U.S.-Israel security agreement provides about $3.8 billion annually in military aid through 2028. Because Congress appropriates the money each year, ending the assistance would still require changes to that funding process.
Trump said the policy shift would not end the defense relationship. Israel would instead be expected to purchase more U.S.-made weapons directly rather than receiving them through American military assistance.
The announcement comes amid growing political debate over U.S. support for Israel. Trump specifically cited criticism from Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, while public polling has shown declining support for unrestricted U.S. aid among Democrats and some Republicans.
Netanyahu’s office did not immediately comment. Israel has received tens of billions of dollars in additional U.S. military assistance since the Gaza war began in 2023.
