Jerusalem, Israel — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel should gradually end its reliance on U.S. military financial support, calling for the remaining aid to be phased out over the next decade.

In an interview with CBS News’ “60 Minutes,” Netanyahu said he wants Israel “to draw down to zero the American financial support,” referring to the roughly $3.8 billion in annual U.S. military assistance Israel receives under a $38 billion, 10-year agreement that runs through 2028.

Netanyahu said Israel has already reduced dependence on some forms of U.S. aid and should continue moving toward greater self-reliance. He framed the shift as beneficial for both countries, arguing that Israel should not remain financially dependent on American taxpayers.

The comments come as U.S. political support for Israel has faced growing pressure since the Gaza war began in October 2023. Some Democrats, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have called for cutting or opposing military aid, while many Republicans continue to strongly support Israel.

Netanyahu also blamed declining American support partly on foreign influence and social media manipulation, saying it closely tracks the drop in public backing. The proposal would mark a major long-term shift in the U.S.-Israel security relationship if carried out.
