WASHINGTON, D.C. — Nearly half of Americans believe U.S. authorities should arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he enters the country, according to a new Economist/YouGov poll showing growing public opposition to Israel’s conduct in Gaza.
The July 25-27 survey found that 49% supported enforcing the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant against Netanyahu. Another 27% opposed an arrest, while 23% were unsure. The poll also found that 47% believed Netanyahu was guilty of war crimes in Gaza.
The ICC issued its warrant in November 2024, alleging responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Netanyahu and the Israeli government reject the accusations. The United States and Israel are not members of the court and do not recognize its authority over their citizens.
The issue resurfaced after New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani called Netanyahu a war criminal and explored whether city officials could detain him during September’s United Nations General Assembly. Mamdani later acknowledged that New York lacks the legal authority to enforce the warrant and urged federal officials to act instead.
President Donald Trump said Netanyahu would not be arrested while visiting the United States. Netanyahu has confirmed that he plans to attend the General Assembly.
