New York, New York — New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said his administration is reviewing whether it could arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visits the city for the United Nations General Assembly this fall.
Mamdani made the comments during an interview on The New York Times podcast “The Interview,” saying Netanyahu “belongs in The Hague.” He cited the International Criminal Court’s 2024 arrest warrant for Netanyahu, which accused the Israeli leader of alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the war in Gaza.
The United States and Israel do not recognize the ICC’s jurisdiction over Israel, and it remains unclear what authority New York City officials would have to act on such a warrant during a U.N. visit. Mamdani said the issue is under review by the city’s legal department and that he would “follow the laws” of New York City.
Netanyahu dismissed Mamdani’s comments in a recent radio interview and accused him of siding with “terror actors.” Mamdani has denied supporting Hamas and has repeatedly criticized Israel’s military actions in Gaza.
World leaders are expected to gather in New York in September for the U.N. General Assembly.
