UNITED NATIONS, NEW YORK — The United States delegation walked out during France’s remarks at a United Nations Security Council meeting Monday, escalating a diplomatic dispute between the longtime allies over human rights policy.

The confrontation followed Friday’s General Assembly vote extending U.N. human rights chief Volker Türk’s term for four years. The measure passed 144-10, with 13 abstentions. The United States joined Russia, Israel and North Korea in opposing the reappointment.

France’s U.N. mission criticized Washington after the vote, saying the United States had once been a leader on human rights but had aligned itself with authoritarian governments. Deputy U.S. representative Dan Negrea called the remarks “condescending and disrespectful” and said American diplomats would leave during France’s statements until the country withdrew them.

U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz accused France of supporting a human rights chief who unfairly targets democracies while accommodating oppressive governments. France’s ambassador, Jérôme Bonnafont, did not directly address the walkout and instead reaffirmed his government’s support for international cooperation and human rights.

The clash reflects broader tensions between President Donald Trump’s administration and the United Nations over funding, human rights oversight and European security.
