TEHRAN, Iran — Iran has suspended indirect negotiations with the United States and is threatening additional regional actions, including the possible closure of the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian state-affiliated media reports.

The move follows renewed tensions involving Israel’s military operations in Lebanon and Gaza. Iranian officials contend that continued Israeli military activity violates conditions necessary for diplomatic engagement and have demanded an immediate halt to operations in both territories before talks can resume.

According to the Tasnim News Agency, Iranian leaders are also considering broader responses, including activating additional regional allies and potentially restricting access to the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important shipping routes for oil and natural gas. Roughly one-fifth of global petroleum consumption passes through the narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to international markets.

Markets reacted quickly to the developments, with oil prices rising more than 2% amid concerns that a wider regional conflict could disrupt energy supplies. Analysts have long warned that any interruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could have significant consequences for global energy prices and international trade.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Tehran would not support any future agreement that fails to guarantee what he described as Iran’s rights and security interests.

Meanwhile, U.S. Central Command confirmed that American forces carried out what it called “self-defense strikes” against Iranian radar and drone facilities over the weekend. U.S. officials said the actions were taken in response to threats against American personnel and assets in the region.

The latest developments further complicate efforts to reduce tensions across the Middle East and revive diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran.
