MARIETTA, GEORGIA — President Donald Trump turned a Wednesday event promoting children’s investment accounts into a campaign attack against Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff, repeatedly labeling Democrats communists and accusing them of threatening American families.

Speaking at Wheeler High School, Trump called Ossoff a “terrible senator” and initially compared him to “Pinky Herman,” apparently confusing the name of television character Pee-wee Herman. He corrected himself later in the speech.

Trump claimed Ossoff and other Democrats want to raise taxes, weaken border protections and permit Marxists to control the government. He also said Democrats opposed tax exemptions for tips, overtime and Social Security income.

Ossoff voted against Trump’s broader 2025 tax and spending package, which included those provisions. However, the no-tax-on-tips proposal had previously attracted bipartisan support, and opposing the full package does not necessarily mean opposing every provision within it.

Trump also described the legislation as delivering the largest tax cut in American history. The Tax Foundation ranks it as the sixth-largest when measured as a percentage of the economy.

The remarks came as Republicans target Ossoff’s Senate seat in one of the country’s most competitive midterm races. Trump endorsed Republican nominee Mike Collins, while Ossoff has increasingly centered his campaign on direct criticism of the president.
