WASHINGTON, D.C. — Sen. Mark Warner is promoting a new federal audit into Immigration and Customs Enforcement surveillance practices, while campaign finance records show recent donations from a major executive tied to the agency’s data systems.
Warner, a Virginia Democrat, highlighted the launch of a Department of Homeland Security inspector general review examining ICE’s data collection and privacy practices. He has argued that the agency’s surveillance tools pose risks to constitutional protections and require stronger oversight.
Federal Election Commission filings show that Alexander Karp, CEO of Palantir Technologies, contributed $37,000 in 2025 to political committees associated with Warner and the Democratic Party of Virginia. Palantir is a key contractor providing data analysis platforms used by ICE to integrate biometric, travel, and criminal records for enforcement purposes.
The overlap has drawn attention because Warner has publicly criticized ICE’s data practices while receiving financial support from a leading figure connected to the technology behind them. Warner’s office has emphasized the importance of independent oversight to evaluate whether such systems are being used appropriately.
The audit is expected to assess potential privacy risks and compliance with constitutional safeguards.
