WASHINGTON, D.C. — Billionaire Elon Musk has offered to pay the salaries of Transportation Security Administration agents during the ongoing Homeland Security funding lapse, as President Donald Trump suggested deploying Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel to airports.
Musk said he would cover TSA payroll costs during the shutdown, which has disrupted travel nationwide and strained airport operations. Based on TSA staffing levels, the offer could exceed $40 million per week, though details on how such a plan would be implemented remain unclear.
Hours after Musk’s proposal, Trump indicated he may send ICE agents to airports if a funding agreement is not reached, stating they could handle security operations. However, questions remain about whether ICE personnel have the training required for airport screening procedures.
The shutdown has intensified pressure on lawmakers as delays increase and millions of travelers are affected daily. TSA screens more than 2.5 million passengers per day, making staffing shortages a significant concern.
The White House has not commented on Musk’s proposal, and negotiations in Congress have shown little progress toward resolving the funding impasse.
