Washington, D.C. — Former U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi failed to appear Tuesday for a congressional deposition regarding the Jeffrey Epstein files, prompting bipartisan calls from lawmakers to consider contempt proceedings.

Members of the House Oversight Committee had subpoenaed Bondi to testify under oath about her handling of materials tied to Epstein. Ranking Member Robert Garcia said her absence amounted to evading “a lawful congressional subpoena,” warning that Democrats would move forward with contempt if she continues to refuse compliance.

The Justice Department informed the committee that Bondi would not attend because she is no longer serving as attorney general. However, some lawmakers, including Republican Rep. Nancy Mace, argued the subpoena applies to Bondi as an individual, not her former role, and called for the deposition to be rescheduled.

Democratic Rep. Summer Lee also criticized Bondi’s decision, saying she must be held accountable “regardless of her title.” The dispute centers on whether former officials are obligated to comply with subpoenas tied to actions taken while in office.

The situation could escalate into formal contempt proceedings if Bondi continues to decline testimony, adding to ongoing scrutiny surrounding the Epstein case and its handling by federal authorities.
