Albany, New York — New York is suing several major chemical companies over PFAS, the toxic “forever chemicals” used for decades in consumer and industrial products.
Attorney General Letitia James filed the lawsuit Thursday against 3M, DuPont, Chemours, Corteva, and EIDP. The state alleges the companies knew PFAS were toxic, persistent in the environment, and harmful to public health, but continued selling products containing them while withholding information from the public.
PFAS have been used in products including nonstick cookware, stain-resistant fabrics, cosmetics, food packaging, and firefighting foam. They are called “forever chemicals” because they break down slowly and can remain in water, soil, and the human body for long periods. Exposure has been linked to cancer, fertility problems, high cholesterol, and immune-system issues.
The lawsuit seeks cleanup costs, damages, penalties, and public warnings about PFAS risks. Reuters reported that 3M declined to comment on the litigation, while DuPont and Corteva said they were wrongly named because they are independent companies. Chemours said it would defend itself.
New York joins other states that have sued PFAS manufacturers over contamination and cleanup costs.
