Miami, Florida — The Trump administration extended work authorization for Haitian Temporary Protected Status holders on Friday, giving workers and employers a short reprieve hours before permits were set to expire.

Reuters reported that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services extended Haitian TPS work permits through July 24. Work permits for TPS holders from Ethiopia, Syria, Somalia, Yemen, South Sudan, and Myanmar were extended for one week.

The decision follows a June 25 Supreme Court ruling that allowed the administration to move forward with ending TPS protections for Haitians and Syrians. TPS allows people from countries facing war, disaster, or severe instability to live and work legally in the United States on a temporary basis.

CBS Miami reported that Haitian community members and advocates in South Florida rallied for a longer extension, warning that losing work authorization could disrupt families, employers, and industries that rely on TPS workers.

Florida has one of the country’s largest Haitian communities, including many TPS recipients working in health care, hospitality, construction, and service jobs. In Springfield, Ohio, Haitian community leaders also said the short extension may reflect ongoing legal proceedings.

After July 24, affected workers may need another legal status to remain employed.
