Miami, Florida — A Florida Republican is urging caution after a Supreme Court ruling cleared the way for the Trump administration to end deportation protections for many Haitians living in the United States.
Rep. Carlos Giménez said Sunday on CBS News’s “Face the Nation” that sending Haitians with Temporary Protected Status back to Haiti would be a “huge mistake.” TPS allows people from countries facing war, disaster, or severe instability to live and work in the U.S. temporarily.
Giménez said Haiti remains a failed state and argued that TPS exists to protect people who could face danger if returned. His comments came after the Supreme Court allowed the administration to move forward with ending protections for more than 350,000 Haitians and about 6,100 Syrians.
The ruling marks a major immigration shift for Haitian communities, especially in Florida, New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. Reuters reported that many TPS holders now face uncertainty over work authorization, legal status, and possible deportation.
Giménez also said TPS should not be abused and that people living in the U.S. for years should seek another lawful status when eligible. Still, he argued that Haiti’s current conditions make deportation unsafe for many protected immigrants.
