Washington, D.C. — A new White House report has placed the Smithsonian Institution at the center of a growing fight over how American history should be presented in federally supported cultural spaces.

The report, released by the White House Domestic Policy Council on Independence Day, accuses Smithsonian leadership, especially at the National Museum of American History, of acting as “radical activists” who cannot be trusted to present the nation’s history fairly. The document says the museum has moved away from scholarship and toward political activism.

President Donald Trump previously targeted the Smithsonian through an executive order titled “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History,” which directed federal officials to review museum funding and programming that the administration says promotes “divisive narratives” or “improper ideology.”

Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch has defended the institution’s approach, saying the country is strengthened by confronting its full history rather than avoiding difficult chapters. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro also criticized the effort, accusing Trump of trying to rewrite history.

The dispute follows other administration actions aimed at cultural and educational institutions, including funding pressure on universities and efforts to reshape public exhibits tied to American history. The White House report signals that leadership changes at the Smithsonian could become the next step.
