Houston, Texas — The fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by a federal immigration officer has drawn national attention, including from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who renewed his call to abolish ICE.

Mamdani said Salgado Araujo had called Houston home for 35 years and argued that his family deserved “a full, independent investigation and real accountability.” His statement followed growing demands from relatives, immigrant advocates, and some elected officials for more transparency about the shooting.

According to ICE, agents were conducting a targeted enforcement operation Tuesday when Salgado Araujo allegedly drove into an ICE vehicle, ignored verbal commands, and used his vehicle in a way that threatened an officer. The agency said the officer fired in self-defense.

Salgado Araujo’s family has disputed that account. His son said his father was a homebuilder driving a crew to work and had no criminal convictions. AP reported that family members said he may not have realized the unmarked vehicles were law enforcement and may have feared he was being robbed.

The Texas Tribune reported that a vigil in Houston drew hundreds of people calling for justice. The case has become another flashpoint in the broader fight over immigration enforcement, deadly force, and local accountability. Federal and local investigations are continuing.
