Austin, Texas — Democrat James Talarico’s Senate campaign says it raised $30 million from April through June, giving him a major fundraising advantage over Republican Ken Paxton in the race to replace retiring Sen. John Cornyn.
Talarico, a Texas state representative, is running to become the first Democrat to win a statewide race in Texas since 1988. His campaign said more than 780,000 donors contributed during the quarter, with about 97% of donations at $100 or less.
Paxton, Texas’s attorney general, reported raising more than $9 million during the same period. His campaign said the total shows Republicans are energized to send a conservative to the Senate and defeat what it called a well-funded Democratic challenge.
The Washington Examiner reported that Talarico also raised $27 million in the first quarter and $600,000 in the two hours after Paxton won the Republican primary runoff. The race is drawing national attention because Democrats see Texas as a possible pickup opportunity, while Republicans are defending a seat they have held for decades.
Recent polling cited by the Washington Examiner showed Talarico and Paxton tied at 47%, with 6% undecided.
