Columbus, Ohio — Ohio Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy is facing a campaign finance complaint over how his campaign reported more than $500,000 in credit card payments.
State Senate Democrats filed the complaint with the Ohio Secretary of State, alleging Ramaswamy’s campaign failed to disclose enough detail about $509,473.01 in payments listed to American Express. Ohio campaign finance rules require campaigns to report information about expenditures over $25, including who received the money and what it was used for.
The Washington Examiner reported that the Secretary of State’s office said such filing issues are not uncommon and that Ramaswamy’s campaign had already received an extension to update the report. A campaign spokesperson said Ramaswamy and running mate Rob McColley are “in full compliance” with Ohio campaign finance laws.
Democrats framed the filing issue as a transparency concern in a competitive governor’s race. Ramaswamy is running against Democrat Amy Acton for the open seat being vacated by term-limited Gov. Mike DeWine.
Reuters reported Ramaswamy won the Republican nomination in May, setting up a general election against Acton. The race has drawn national attention as Democrats look for pickup opportunities in a state where Republicans currently hold every statewide office.
