Columbus, Ohio — Republican businessman Vivek Ramaswamy won Ohio’s Republican primary for governor Tuesday, setting up a high-profile general election against Democratic nominee Amy Acton in what is expected to become one of the most expensive gubernatorial races in state history.
Ramaswamy defeated challenger Casey Putsch after building a campaign heavily backed by personal wealth and support from President Donald Trump. Trump endorsed Ramaswamy earlier this year, helping consolidate Republican support behind the former presidential candidate and biotech entrepreneur. Ramaswamy also gained national attention through his brief partnership with Elon Musk on a federal government restructuring initiative before stepping away to focus on the Ohio race.
According to campaign finance filings, Ramaswamy has more than $30 million available for the general election, including roughly $25 million in self-funding. His campaign has already launched a $10 million statewide advertising push focused on taxes, business growth, and reducing government regulations.
Democrat Amy Acton, Ohio’s former health director during the COVID-19 pandemic, secured her party’s nomination unopposed and enters the race with approximately $5 million on hand. Acton is expected to focus her campaign on healthcare access, abortion rights, and public education funding.
Political analysts expect the race to draw significant national attention as Republicans seek to maintain control of the governor’s office in the traditionally Republican-leaning state.
