Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump questioned the sexual assault allegations against former Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner on Wednesday, hours before Platner suspended his campaign.
Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Trump said, “It’s really a question of whether or not you believe the woman. A lot of people say big falsehoods.” He added that Platner was “in a bind.”
Platner, the former Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Maine, ended his campaign after Politico reported that Jenny Racicot, a woman who previously dated him, accused him of sexually assaulting her in 2021. Platner denied the allegation, saying, “Any accusation of non-consensual behavior is categorically untrue.”
The controversy followed earlier reports about Platner’s offensive online comments, allegations about past behavior toward women, and a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol. Major Democratic supporters, including Sen. Bernie Sanders, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Rep. Ro Khanna, and Sen. Ruben Gallego, withdrew their endorsements.
The Associated Press reported that Maine Democrats now face a short deadline to replace Platner as their nominee against Republican Sen. Susan Collins. Reuters reported that Platner said the movement behind his campaign should continue without him.
