Democrats Urge Platner Exit After Sexual Assault Allegation

Portland, Maine — Maine’s U.S. Senate race shifted sharply Monday after Democratic nominee Graham Platner was accused of sexual assault by a woman he previously dated, prompting senior Democrats and outside groups to call for him to withdraw.

Politico reported that Jenny Racicot, a 41-year-old Maine resident, said Platner forced her to have sex in 2021 after entering her home intoxicated despite her objections. Platner denied the allegation, saying, “Any accusation of non-consensual behavior is categorically untrue.” Politico said it interviewed Racicot several times, spoke with people she had confided in, and reviewed documents, including messages and emails involving her therapist.

Platner’s campaign called the allegation false and claimed it was being pushed by political opponents. He later said he would step back from campaigning to “reflect” on the best path forward.

The fallout was immediate. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chair Kirsten Gillibrand said Platner should withdraw so Maine Democrats can choose a new candidate to face Republican Sen. Susan Collins. They warned Senate Democrats would not invest in the race if Platner remains the nominee.

The Maine Democratic Party also urged him to exit, while Rep. Ro Khanna and Sen. Ruben Gallego withdrew endorsements. The Washington Examiner reported that Maine law gives Platner until July 13 to remove his name from the ballot, after which Democrats would have until July 27 to select a replacement.

A Wedgewood poll reported by The Hill found 75% of Maine voters said Platner should drop out if another scandal surfaced, though the poll was conducted before Politico’s full report was published.

Collins said the allegations are “appalling” but added that choosing the Democratic nominee is not her role.
