Nassau County, New York — Gov. Kathy Hochul announced $100 million in public safety funding Monday during a visit to Nassau County, where Republican County Executive Bruce Blakeman is challenging her in the governor’s race.
The funding includes at least $75 million for police departments and sheriffs’ offices outside New York City through the state’s Law Enforcement Tech Grant program. Eligible agencies can apply for equipment such as body-worn cameras, drones, gunshot detection systems, 3-D crime scene scanners, trauma kits, defibrillators, and protective vests.
Another $25 million will support a statewide records management system intended to replace an older platform and improve information sharing among law enforcement agencies. Hochul said the spending will help police modernize equipment and “meet today’s public safety challenges.”
The announcement came shortly after a Siena College poll showed Hochul leading Blakeman statewide by 20 points, 52% to 32%. The same poll found Hochul leading in downstate suburbs by 11 points, though Blakeman remained competitive in Nassau County.
Blakeman has criticized Hochul on public safety in campaign messaging, while Nassau County Municipal Police Chiefs Association President Brian Paladino praised the new funding as an investment in fighting crime.
