Largo, Florida — A 77-year-old Army veteran was investigated by Florida financial-crimes detectives after sending a postcard to state Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia that read, “You lack values.”
James O’Gara told investigators he sent the message as political criticism and did not intend it as a threat. Records obtained by Reason show the Florida Department of Financial Services opened a threat assessment after the postcard reached Ingoglia’s office in September 2025.
The order moved through the department’s Criminal Investigations Division before two detectives visited O’Gara’s home on Oct. 1. According to audio and reports described by Reason, the detectives repeatedly told O’Gara he had done nothing wrong and later concluded there was no credible threat.
O’Gara objected to the visit, saying he had a First Amendment right to criticize public officials. Detectives also interviewed two neighbors before closing the matter.
Ingoglia later told News 6 that he did not see the postcard and did not order the investigation. DFS said the postcard arrived shortly after the assassination of Charlie Kirk, during heightened law-enforcement vigilance around threats to public officials.
After the incident became public, Ingoglia’s office reportedly received dozens of similar postcards from across the country.
