Washington, D.C. — The Democratic Socialists of America says it has reached a new membership high, adding to debate inside the Democratic Party over the influence of its left flank.
The DSA said it topped 120,000 members over the July Fourth weekend, which the group described as the largest membership total for a socialist organization in U.S. history. The increase follows several election wins by DSA-backed candidates, including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who won in November 2025 with support from the organization’s canvassing and get-out-the-vote operation.
The Washington Examiner reported that DSA-backed candidates have also gained ground in recent Democratic primaries in New York, prompting criticism from more centrist Democrats who argue the movement could hurt the party in broader elections. Supporters counter that DSA candidates are winning by focusing on rent, public transit, wages, and affordability.
President Donald Trump used his Independence Day speech to criticize socialism and communism, saying, “America will never be a communist country.” Trump also told reporters last week that he does not view democratic socialism as meaningfully separate from communism.
The DSA describes itself as a political and activist organization, not a party, and says its members work through local chapters and electoral campaigns.
