Washington, D.C. — Federal agents seized electronic devices from former Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell at a California airport before searching his Washington home the following day, according to CNN reporting cited by Mediaite.
Agents approached Swalwell at San Francisco International Airport on Saturday and took his electronics, CNN reported. The FBI then executed a search warrant at his Washington residence on Sunday. The precise criminal allegations underlying the warrant have not been publicly disclosed.
The searches come months after FBI Director Kash Patel moved to release records from a decade-old investigation involving Swalwell and Christine Fang, a suspected Chinese intelligence operative. Earlier congressional and FBI investigations did not result in criminal charges against Swalwell, and the House Ethics Committee closed its inquiry without taking action.
Documents declassified by President Donald Trump this week reportedly show Swalwell told FBI agents in 2015 that he had several sexual encounters with Fang but denied they had a romantic relationship. Swalwell has previously maintained that he cooperated with federal investigators after being alerted to concerns about Fang.
Swalwell resigned from Congress in April and suspended his California gubernatorial campaign following separate sexual-assault and misconduct allegations, which he has denied.
Neither the FBI nor prosecutors have publicly announced charges connected to the latest searches.
