Spanish Fort, Alabama — A federal Homeland Security Investigations agent who worked on child exploitation cases has been charged with multiple sex crimes involving an underage girl, Alabama authorities said Tuesday.
Kent Blacklidge, 43, surrendered to the Baldwin County jail on Sept. 5 after a grand jury indicted him on charges including first- and second-degree rape, sodomy and sexual abuse. The allegations stem from a child sexual abuse report filed Jan. 11, according to Spanish Fort Police Chief John Barber.
Blacklidge was placed on administrative leave by HSI after the investigation began. Authorities have not released detailed information about the alleged victim or the circumstances surrounding the accusations.
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall called the case particularly troubling because Blacklidge’s federal duties included investigating child exploitation and educating the public about online predators.
“That’s why it’s so profoundly disappointing and frankly disgusting that we stand here today and tell you that we charged him,” Marshall said during a news conference.
The Alabama Attorney General’s Office is handling the prosecution because Blacklidge has served as a witness in cases involving the local district attorney’s office, creating a conflict that required recusal.
Blacklidge has been released on bond exceeding $350,000, according to officials. His release conditions include electronic monitoring, home confinement and orders barring contact with the alleged victim or anyone under 18.
The charges are allegations, and Blacklidge has not been convicted.
