Houston, Texas — A man was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer Tuesday morning during a targeted enforcement operation in Houston’s East End.

ICE identified the man as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national. The agency told The Hill that officers attempted a traffic stop around 6:50 a.m. as part of an operation to arrest a person it described as being in the country illegally.

According to ICE, Salgado Araujo attempted to evade arrest, drove into an ICE vehicle, ignored verbal commands, and used his vehicle in an attempt to run over an officer. The agency said the officer fired in self-defense. Salgado Araujo was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The FBI’s Houston office is investigating the case as a potential assault on a federal law enforcement officer. The Associated Press reported that Democratic officials and immigrant-rights groups have called for an independent investigation and the release of evidence supporting the government’s account.

The shooting comes amid heightened scrutiny of federal immigration enforcement tactics during President Donald Trump’s second term. ICE has not released body camera footage or additional evidence publicly.
