Ankara, Turkey — President Donald Trump said Wednesday that an interim ceasefire with Iran is “over” after renewed attacks near the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian strikes on U.S. military sites in the Gulf.
Reuters reported that Trump made the comments in Ankara before a NATO summit, calling negotiations with Iran a “waste of time,” though U.S. representatives were still allowed to continue talks. The ceasefire had been intended to create a negotiation window for a longer-term agreement after months of conflict.
U.S. Central Command launched strikes on more than 80 Iranian targets after attacks on three commercial tankers near the Strait of Hormuz, according to Reuters. The administration also revoked a license allowing Iran to sell crude oil and petrochemical products through Aug. 21.
Iran responded with missile and drone attacks targeting U.S. sites in Bahrain and Kuwait, while Iranian officials accused Washington of violating the ceasefire first. The Associated Press reported that the exchange has raised new concerns about a wider regional escalation.
Markets reacted quickly. Reuters reported Brent crude rose about 5% to roughly $78 per barrel as ships avoided the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy routes.
