Rochester, New York — A Rochester man is suing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement after federal officers came to his home over a critical email he sent to the agency’s former acting director.
David Streever, a U.S. citizen, sent the email in January to then-acting ICE Director Todd Lyons after an ICE officer fatally shot Minneapolis resident Renee Good. The Associated Press reported that Streever used harsh political language, calling Lyons a “monstrous human being” and comparing him to a Nazi official.
According to the lawsuit, two DHS officers went to Streever’s home in June while he was traveling in Finland and gave his wife a warning notice saying the email was considered a threat. The lawsuit also says officials later tried to reach him at a New York City hotel and left repeated voicemails.
Streever argues the visit and follow-up contact violated his First Amendment rights by intimidating him over protected political speech. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression is representing him.
DHS denied trying to suppress speech and said threats against law enforcement will have consequences. The Associated Press reported Streever is one of at least two upstate New York residents contacted by federal officers after criticizing ICE online.
