Athens, Georgia — Vice President JD Vance on Tuesday criticized Pope Leo XIV’s recent remarks on war and theology, saying the pontiff should “be careful” when weighing in on such issues.

Speaking at a Turning Point USA event, Vance pushed back on the pope’s suggestion that followers of Christ should not “wield the sword,” arguing the statement overlooks long-standing religious doctrines such as Just War theory. Vance pointed to World War II, asking whether God supported American forces who helped defeat Nazi Germany and liberate concentration camps.

“I certainly think the answer is yes,” Vance said, framing his comments as a disagreement over theological interpretation rather than broader policy disputes. Vance, who is Catholic, said he respects the pope’s role but believes clergy should ensure their statements are “anchored in the truth.”

The exchange follows recent tensions between Pope Leo and President Donald Trump, who criticized the pontiff over his stance on the U.S.-Israeli conflict involving Iran. Leo has said he intends to continue advocating for peace and emphasized that his views are rooted in religious teachings.
