Washington, D.C. — The United States launched new strikes against Iran after an attack on a commercial ship in the Strait of Hormuz, further weakening a fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran.

Reuters reported that U.S. Central Command struck Iranian military targets after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps attacked the Cyprus-flagged container ship M/V GFS Galaxy in the Strait of Hormuz. The ship suffered significant damage, and crew members were forced to abandon the vessel.

Iran then declared the Strait of Hormuz closed “until further notice,” accusing vessels of violating navigation directives and blaming U.S. interference for the escalation. The waterway is one of the world’s most important energy routes, and even temporary disruptions can affect oil and gas prices.

President Donald Trump said the U.S. was prepared to respond with overwhelming force if Iran escalated further. Iranian officials accused Washington of violating the ceasefire and warned that additional U.S. attacks would bring a severe response.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the U.S. strikes targeted Iranian missile and drone sites after renewed fighting around the strait. The exchange leaves no clear path back to the ceasefire agreement reached in June.
