Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump said Tuesday that his administration is considering renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America” as the United States and Canada enter another round of escalating tariffs and increasingly hostile rhetoric.
“The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America,” Trump wrote on social media, adding that Washington does not expect to conduct much business with Ontario. The statement echoed Trump’s 2025 executive action renaming the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.”
The proposal came after U.S.-Canada trade negotiations collapsed and Washington imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion in Canadian goods. Canada is preparing retaliatory tariffs, while Trump has also threatened 50% duties on Canadian-made vehicles, auto parts and steel.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has accused Washington of trying to weaken major Canadian industries and said his government will not accept negotiations treating Canada as subordinate to the United States.
Lake Ontario is shared by both countries, with the international boundary running through the lake. Trump did not explain how a U.S. name change would apply to the Canadian portion or whether any formal process has begun.
The broader trade dispute threatens highly integrated North American supply chains in automobiles, manufacturing, agriculture and energy, potentially raising costs for businesses and consumers in both countries.
