Washington, D.C. — The White House has selected Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb to lead a new scientific advisory council examining unidentified anomalous phenomena, or UAPs, through a national security lens.

The council will advise a new UAP Governance Board created under President Donald Trump’s push to release more government information about UFOs. The effort is being coordinated through the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and federal defense agencies, which have already released several batches of UAP-related files this year.

Loeb, a former chair of Harvard’s astronomy department, is known for arguing that some unexplained objects could warrant serious scientific review, including the possibility of extraterrestrial technology. His views have made him popular in UFO circles but controversial among some scientists who question his methods and public conclusions.

According to the Associated Press, Loeb’s team includes scientists, UFO advocates, retired Rear Adm. Timothy Gallaudet, and entrepreneur Ben Lamm. The group has requested more than 50 Pentagon videos, images, and documents tied to known UAP incidents.

Loeb says the council will begin by assuming the objects may have human-made or national security explanations while following available evidence. Critics warn the panel could blur the line between credible research and speculation.
