Washington, D.C. — Tennessee Republican Rep. Andy Ogles introduced new immigration legislation hours after the U.S. Supreme Court upheld birthright citizenship and blocked President Donald Trump’s executive order seeking to limit it.
The Court ruled that children born in the United States to parents who are undocumented or temporarily present are covered by the 14th Amendment’s Citizenship Clause. Chief Justice John Roberts cited the 1898 United States v. Wong Kim Ark decision, which affirmed citizenship for most people born on U.S. soil. AP reported the ruling rejected Trump’s attempt to change that policy through executive action.
According to The Center Square, Ogles’ proposed “Anchors Away Act” would restrict entry for pregnant nonimmigrants and redefine who is considered subject to U.S. jurisdiction for citizenship purposes. Ogles criticized the Court’s decision and argued Congress should respond legislatively.
The proposal follows Ogles’ broader immigration push. His office recently announced the “Remigration Act,” which seeks to expand denaturalization and deportation authorities for certain people accused of abusing immigration laws or threatening national security.
Tennessee Democratic Party Chair Rachel Campbell called the Court ruling a constitutional victory and accused Republicans of using immigration fear for political gain.
